The qualification is made up of 18 Units of competency encompassing both theoretical knowledge based assessments and practical and skill based assessments.  Practical assessments will include horse handling, transporting, lunging, and administering First Aid for horses.

Upon enrolment, students are allocated 24 months for completion of this qualification. This qualification is self-paced allowing students to complete in a shorter period If desired.

Each unit contains theory and practical components to be completed. The benefit of our course is that all aspects can be completed anywhere in Australia.

Each unit of Competency will contain a blend of theory knowledge questions and practical skills-based assessments.

To complete the practical tasks within this course students must have access to 3 calm, consistent, obedient, and suitable horses.

Practical Assessments may need to be recorded and submitted to AEI for assessment. Students will be able to utilise a third-party coach for practical assessments if they have access to a credible and qualified coach. (Please contact our office to discuss.)

All students must:

• Undergo a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) quiz.
• Be 15 years or over at the time of entry into the course
• Be physically able to undertake the practical assessments
• Have access to 3 calm, consistent and obedient horses for practical assessments. All horses must be suitable for the tasks listed in the Practical Task Requirements below
• Have access to a person at least 18 years of age that can be present during all practical assessments to ensure safety is maintained.
• Have access to a suitable ‘work environment’* for practical assessments.

*A work environment in this context is anywhere suitable that work with an equine can occur. E.g. stables, paddocks, yards, tracks, exercise arenas and public areas

All students must:

• Undergo a Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) quiz.
• Be 15 years or over at the time of entry into the course
• Be physically able to undertake the practical assessments
• Have access to 3 calm, consistent and obedient horses that are suitable for the required tasks (see below)
• Have access to a person at least 18 years of age that can be present during all practical assessments to ensure safety is maintained.
• Have access to a suitable ‘work environment’* for practical assessments.

Certificate III Horse Care

The horses used for demonstration throughout this qualification must be able to perform each of the following tasks. (Each task is required to be performed on 3 horses unless noted below).

• Provide restraints to each horse including a head collar and halter and lead
• Tie up each horse, using a quick release safety knot
• Lead each horse in single file with other horses and handlers
• Lead each horse through a group of at least 2 other horses
• Lead each horse through a gate, narrow opening and a confined space
• Lead each horse using cues (e.g. go, slow, turn, stop).
• Relocate 2 horses that are positioned in the same place (e.g. stable)
• Treat and monitor a horse for an abscess and apply treatment to a cut on a shoulder of a different horse
• Take vital signs of each horse
• Administer oral medication and re-dress a cut to a recovering horse
• Load, secure and unload each horse in a transport vehicle
• Lunge each horse in a bridle or cavesson (at least 5 minutes to the right, and 5 minutes to the left each). Each horse must be controlled during a walk, trot and canter in both directions.
• Complete cool down procedures on each horse
• Conduct horse health checks on each horse
• Apply the leg, fetlock and hoof treatment for 1 horse
• Externally observe and check each horses’ teeth
• Drench and vaccinate a horse
• Provide Oral worming paste to 1 horse
• Groom, rug and monitor each horse
• Trim and tidy each horses mane, tail and bridle path using 2 of the following tools: Scissors, Small trimming clippers, Thinning Combs
• Provide post exercise care to each horse
• Wash and dry 2 horses
• Develop and implement health routines for each horse (2 horses must be at different stages of life and/or gender) in accordance with a manager, vet or other equine health practitioner
• Demonstrate how to quarantine a horse
